Legacy in Words: Deaf and Disabled Authors of Aotearoa

Works by Deaf and disabled authors capture the experience, creativity, and imagination of these communities, enriching the cultural tapestry of Aotearoa.

Through this project, Arts Access Aotearoa aims to acknowledge and celebrate the literary contributions of Deaf and disabled writers in Aotearoa New Zealand. We will create an online resource that both records and showcases this vibrant community of writers and their work, serving as a dynamic resource for readers, researchers, and arts supporters alike.

This funding will enable us to establish and develop this digital database, setting it up as a legacy resource. It will be maintained and expanded as part of our Taha Hotu Deaf and disabled artists initiative. This project will not only preserve important literary legacies but also encourage new audiences to discover and engage with the diverse stories and perspectives of Deaf and disabled writers.
