Intermediate Writers Award

The Intermediate Writers Award is a unique non-fiction writing event open to all Aotearoa classrooms, years 5 to 8. The award offers an authentic and purposeful writing experience that is engaging and relevant to our rangatahi. We promote discussion about current issues and experiences facing youth in our modern world.

The IWA provides students with a reading booklet that introduces the topic, the essay question and a writing guide, for that year. We also provide teachers with a linked NZC plan.

The IWA is a platform where writers are:

1. Engaged in a nationwide conversation surrounding the essay topic; and

2. Composing arguments with a genuine audience in mind.

Our phenomenal judges provide written feedback to all winners and those highly commended in each age group.

The Foundation is supporting the entry of low decile schools into the award and helping to upgrade the database.
